Dong Luo is a Postdoctoral Fellow at AidData, housed at the William & Mary Global Research Institute (GRI), where he conducts data-driven based methods to identify crop types and analyze environmental effects with spatial analysis models. As a member of the GeoField (Geospatial Earth Observation for Impact Evaluation Learning and Development) Initiative, he uses machine and deep learning models for environmental impact evaluations from space of climate-sensitive agricultural activities with Earth Observation Data.

Dong's primary research interests are land use and land cover mapping with deep learning; machine and deep learning models for environmental evaluation; and interaction between environment change and agricultural expansion.

He enjoys exploring the possibility of AI in the environment evaluation domain and adapting up-to-date machine and deep learning algorithms to address real-world problems from space and time.

Ph.D., Agricultural Expansion and Environmental impacts, Kansas State University

M.S., Environment Response and Land Use Change, Wuhan University

B.Sc., Geographical Science, Sichuan Normal University

Prior to joining AidData, Dong was a postdoctoral research associate in the Geospatial Sciences Center of Excellence at South Dakota State University. The experience helped him strengthen his research interests by deeply understanding medium spatial resolution satellite imagery, such as Landsat series and Sentinel-2. During that time, he worked with peers to use state-of-art deep learning algorithms for large-scale multi-classification tasks. He has more than 7 years of experience using Geographic Information System and Earth Observation Data to estimate environmental responses due to land use and land cover change. He recently collaborated with colleagues in Brazil to examine pollinator biodiversity changes due to agricultural expansion with multi-sensor remote sensing images. Before pursuing his doctoral degree, he had 5 years of experience in performing comprehensive environmental assessments of people who were affected by the Three Gorges Dam Project in China.
