U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission Hearing on "China’s Activities and Influence in South and Central Asia"

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will hold a hearing Thursday, May 12, on "China's Activities and Influence in South and Central Asia," starting at 9:30 a.m. ET. Commissioners and witnesses will participate by videoconference or in person. Members of the public will be able to view a live webcast via the Commission’s website here.
The hearing will:
- Examine China's economic goals and security concerns in Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as shifts in China's policy toward the region since the return of Taliban rule in Afghanistan.
- Evaluate China's growing presence as an economic and security partner in Central Asia and the implications for the China-Russia relationship.
- Explore China's growing influence in continental South Asia, including how it shapes China-India competition and affects states near the Sino-Indian border such as Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
- Examine China's strategic interests and advances in the Indian Ocean, including its economic engagement with Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Samantha Custer, AidData Director of Policy Analysis, will speak at 3:30pm on Panel IV: Competing Visions for the Indian Ocean about "Competition in the Indian Ocean and China’s engagement with Sri Lanka and the Maldives."
