Project Description: Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) Malawi aims to improve the quality and relevance of basic education in Malawi. The purpose is to improve the scope and quality of national pre-service teacher training for the primary school sector.Expected Impact: Reduced dropout and repetition rates for girls and boys and effective and efficient, gender-sensitive learning.Expected Outcomes: 1. Increased capacity of teachers to apply new learner-centered, gender-sensitive teaching methodologies, as well as methods for continuous assessment of student performance. 2. Sufficient supply of qualified primary teachers, especially females, and especially to rural areas.Expected Outputs: 1. Increased number of primary teachers are recruited and trained under new IPTE Program, in particular female teachers. 2. Training in gender-sensitive mentoring practices and learner-centered methodologies (Mentors, Head Teachers, Primary Education Advisors and college lecturers). 3. Increased supply of up-to-date and gender-sensitive essential teaching and learning materials. 4. Improvements to the Teacher Training Colleges (science labs, workshops and school gardens). 5. Stronger ownership of the IPTE Program by communities, School Management Committees and Parent Teacher Associations. 6.
