AidData and the CRS

The Creditor Reporting System (CRS), maintained by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the OECD, has been collecting information on international aid and activity-level aid since 1960 and 1973, respectively. An authoritative source of annual statistical information, the CRS contains information on Official Development Assistance (ODA) and other official flows from DAC and some non-DAC donors. Complementing the work of the OECD, AidData provides data on detailed development activities from a wide range of DAC and non-DAC actors in an accessible format.

What are the differences between the two approaches? The CRS database contains the official statistics on aid and other official private flows, as well as information on concessional and non-concessional flows from multilateral institutions. Information in the CRS database is submitted by donor agencies and verified by OECD. AidData’s data portal expands upon OECD’s work, integrating additional information from sources not covered by the CRS, including development resource flows not classified as “official development assistance”, financing for recipients that have graduated from ODA eligibility and aid activity records prior to 1995.

The International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) seeks to make development aid information more accessible and useful. The initiative includes bilateral, multilateral, and private donor organizations, along with countries that receive aid. The IATI data standard is an emerging global standard for reporting aid information that allows donors to organize their information using a comparable format with three components: the Activity Standard, the Organization Standard, and the IATI Codelists.

AidData’s development assistance information is exportable in the IATI Standard format. AidData continues to work with IATI and data providers to improve the quality and comprehensiveness of the information provided.
